The historical discussion group to be held under the rubric This year at Chistiye Prudy something interesting is going to happen anticipates the unveiling, in January 2020, of an educational programme at St. Philaret’s Institute (29 Pokrovka ul., metro Chistiye Prudy).
In Russia, people have learned to distrust historians. Too often during the 20th century historians too often did no more than serve the leading ideology of the day. But if we don’t come to terms with the past, we can’t understand ourselves.
Questions for Discussion:
- Why do people lose their sense of history and is it possible to renew it?
- Is it possible to speak of unity in historical meaning, or is factual accuracy only possible in terms of “micro-history”?
- Can historians be allowed to evaluate, on ethic grounds, the objects of their studies?
- How is our study of history related to our living within it?
Meeting Participants and Teachers in the New St. Philaret’s Programme:
- Vladimir Chernyaev, Researcher specializing in the Russian Emigration;
- Constantine Obozny, Dean of the SFI History Faculty;
- Daria Timokhina, Historian.
