Christian Foreigners in Russia

Righteous Foreigners on Russian Soil is an event dedicated to looking at the fates of foreign believers who came to Russian for one reason or another, found their calling here and even attained sainthood. Some of the most obvious examples are Maxim the Greek, and Friedrich Joseph Haass, the “Holy Doctor of Moscow”.

Programme: Meeting with a Living Gallery of the Righteous.

Questions for Discussion:

  • What challenges do foreign Christians in Russia run into? How do they respond to these challenges? Where do they look for inspiration and what comes of this?
  • Does the righteousness of Protestants and Catholics living in Russia have a particular significance for Orthodox Christians?

Among those invited to the conversation are:

  • Priestmonk Giovanni (Guaita), who serves at the Church of Kosmos and Damian in Shubino (Moscow);
  • Marina Mikhailova, PhD and Professor at the Russian Christian Humanitarian Academy in St. Petersburg;
  • Jean-Francois Thiry, Director of the Pokrovskiye Vorota Cultural Centre, in Moscow.

This event is being run with the support of the Bavarian Cultural Centre for Germans from Russia (BKDR).
