Church-Russian Language

Worship services in Church-Russian: Impossible? Possible? Desirable? is a festival event dedicated to redressing this issue already thoroughly discussed 100 years ago at the local church council of 1917–1918. The meeting’s participants intend to discuss how their experience of worship in their native language – a language which they completely understand and feel – affects their spiritual lives, and what it brings to the life of their parishes and communities.

Programme:

  • A discussion entitled, “is it possible to pray in your native language, and how?”
  • A presentation of liturgical singing in Church-Russian.

Questions for Discussion:

  • Could worship in Church-Russian help get a larger number of people to church to participant in worship, and renew the meaning of church worship for the people of our nation? Does everything become understandable just by switching to our own language?
  • How is the use of Russian language for worship services dangerous, and how is it helpful?
  • How is Russian used in worship services at present? What are the fruits of this practice?

Priests, lay people and church historians will take part in the discussion.
